Thames Lighter Instructions These are simple box structures which can be made to any length (within reason!). The plan shows a 16" model - just extend the base and sides if you want a longer one. The 16" model shown can just be made out of a 1m sheet of 1/8" balsa, using a small bit of 1/16" for the deck. If these are to be made for towing, mount a strong towing point on your barge, and seal the end compartments well - possibly using expanded foam. To provide towing weights they can conveniently be filled with water - even when filled to the brim they will still float. For bigger or more robust models, scale them up and make out of marine ply... 1 - Cut out part shapes. Glue the two sides to the base, and attach the ends with the bow and stern formers slotted into position. 2 - mount the crosspieces on each former, and attach the Bow and Stern plates. Check that they are level. 3 - Add the two coaming pieces, and glue the side decks into position. 4 - add a small 1/16" strip around the ends to support the deck and side skins. See the build log on the site. 5 - Add the bow and stern decks, trimming to fit with the side decks. 6 - pin and glue the end skins into place. If cut as specified acreoss the grain they will bend easily. 7 - Sand down, apply several coats of sealing paint and decorate to taste.....
